Students may not pray before they play, according to the Illinois High School Association, but Senator Tim Bivins hopes to change that – for private schools at the very least.

Senator Bivins is sponsoring a legislative proposal to reverse a no-prayer ruling by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).

Senate Bill 2282 would allow private schools to hold a short announced prayer before all athletic events sanctioned by the IHSA, including state tournaments.

“The restriction that the IHSA put on the schools was that they couldn’t announce prayer over public address systems, which many of these schools have done for decades. This was for state series tournaments,” Senator Bivins said. “It’s too far reaching in my opinion. It violates the First Amendment. We are not to restrict the free exercise of religion and this is what is happening here.”
