Senator Tim Bivins says the Illinois Department of Agriculture should allow local farmers to decide if they want to participate in the Illinois Department of Agriculture’s Premises ID program, instead of mandating it.

Senate Republicans leaders have been meeting with Department of Agriculture officials and asking them to reconsider mandatory participation in the program, especially as a condition for farmers to exhibit livestock at county and state fairs. Many exhibitors rent space for their animals on other farms, and if that farm in not registered then exhibitors cannot participate at fairs.

“The Premises ID program has generated some controversy,” Senator Bivins said. “While many people support the concept of a system to better track animals for public health purposes, they do not agree that the Department should mandate participation or link it to 4-H’ers showing their animals at county fairs.”
