Protecting citizens from high-tech crime is the aim of a new law sponsored by Senator Tim Bivins to target criminals who use scanning devices to steal credit card information.

Signed into law by the Governor August 15, Senate Bill 151 prohibits the use of a radio frequency identification device to steal personal identifying information from a radio frequency identification chip – now found in some credit cards – to commit a felony.

“Illinois law needs to change to address our ever-changing technology and the high-tech criminals who misuse it to steal people’s personal information directly from the credit cards in their pockets or purses,” Senator Bivins said." />
