Facing a March 13 deadline to move bills out of Senate committees, lawmakers worked during the week ending March 14 to advance their measures to the Senate floor for further debate, according to Senator Tim Bivins.

In other business, several Senate Republican lawmakers unveiled a comprehensive Medicaid reform package, targeting the state’s rapidly expanding Medicaid obligations. If signed into law, the measures would reduce the growing backlog of $1.7 billion in unpaid bills to healthcare providers and further improve the level of service those patients receive.

Years of Medicaid expansions coupled with increased state spending and a lack of significant revenue growth has pushed Illinois to the financial brink, Sen. Bivins said. The package includes the following initiatives:

• SB 2463: Places a moratorium on new or expanded Medicaid programs, unless approved by the General Assembly.
