It’s a rite of passage every lawmaker must endure when his or her first bill comes up for a vote – and Senator Tim Bivins took it with a smile.

After some good-natured ribbing and tongue-in-cheek razzing, the Senate voted 58-0 to pass Senator Bivins’ first bill. House Bill 4229 permits school administrations to use “certified mail” as well as “registered mail” when mailing notices and documents.

“There’s a tradition of friendly verbal hazing for lawmakers when their first bills are called for a vote,” Senator Bivins said. “After 32 years in law enforcement, I have heard a lot, so I figured I could take whatever they dished out. And all joking aside, I am very pleased that the legislation passed with a unanimous vote.”
