Neither the Senate nor the House was in session this week, having initially concluded the spring session May 31; however, legislative work may not be complete, according to Senator Tim Bivins.

Three of the four top legislative leaders, including Senate Republican Leader Frank Watson of Greenville, met with Governor Rod Blagojevich in Chicago June 5 to continue discussions on a new state budget and a capital improvement construction program for roads, bridges, schools and other public facilities. Little progress was made during the meeting, but additional talks are expected in the coming week.

Senator Bivins said additional budget negotiations are necessary because the Democrat majorities in the Senate and House of Representatives passed a Fiscal Year 2009 state budget that is $2 billion out of balance and then left it up to the Governor to use his veto powers to make adjustments.
