While both the Senate and the House of Representatives returned to Springfield July 9 and 10 for special legislative sessions called by the Governor, only the House returned during the week of July 14-18 to address Governor Rod Blagojevich’s vetoes to the state budget.

Of the Governor’s $1.4 billion in vetoes, the House voted to override about $480 million of the reductions made. However, none of these veto overrides will go into effect unless the Senate overrides them as well.

Senator Tim Bivins said the Governor’s cuts brought the budget closer to being balanced, but it still has a sizable hole of $700 million based on the Governor’s previous estimates that the budget was $2.1 billion in the red.
