Senator Tim Bivins says that strong protests by northwestern Illinois citizens have delayed the closing of state parks and historic sites for now, but efforts continue to make sure that funding for the sites is fully restored.
On September 16, the Governor announced that the closing date for historic sites has been delayed from October 1 to October 15, and the closing date for state parks will now be November 30 instead of November 1.
“The voices of northwestern Illinois have been heard. The more than 700 people who attended a public forum September 10 at the Oregon Coliseum, the many others who have called my offices for petitions, the school children who drew pictures and wrote letters to the Governor – you all have taken time from your busy schedules to let this Governor know how important our state parks and historic sites are,” Senator Bivins said. “This is a victory for the people and we should be pleased. However, as of right now the closings have only been delayed, not cancelled. We still have work to do.”" /> Skip to Main Content
